Fifty-four minutes after Kris Hopkins was born, his father snuck into the hospital nursery and slid a miniature football into his hands. It has been there ever since, helping him through the death of his mother, through a childhood with a single parent that was always working, even getting him a college education.
Now thirty-seven and the aging star quarterback for the Portland Warriors, Kris suffers his fifth concussion and for the first time is forced to take stock of the life around him. Of the son that abhors football and goes out of his way to avoid games. Of the college sweetheart and mother of his child he never did right by. Of the fancy car and posh home that all lend themselves to an image he never intended to create.
More than that though, it forces him to take stock of his own mortality and trying to determine how someone that has always identified himself as a football player comes to grips with that part of his life ending.

This review was first published at M's BookshelfOne of the things I've always very much appreciated in Dustin Steven's writing, is the raw honesty of his characters. Whether it's their physical appearance, their behavior or thoughts, Dustin always gives you a 'real', unapologetic person.
Although knowing next to nothing about football, the thrill of the game, the locker room excitement and the fan-euphoria described was contagious. Just as vivid was Kris' struggle coming to terms with his new, post-injury reality.
Where it fell short for me, was Kris' personal life. His character struggles with finding a balance between "Kris Hopkins" and "the quarterback", and that conflict almost translated itself into the writing as well. Where "the quarterback's" turmoil was expressed so well, Kris' emotions when it comes to his personal relationships, remained a complete mystery throughout the book. To me it felt like there is so much more to this character and his story, and therefore the book just didn't live up to it's full potential. Missed opportunity.

Quarterback edition by Dustin Stevens Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is one of the best stories I have read about sports. It isn’t about the sport, but about people who are in or affected by the sport.
Really great read, especially for those of us reaching the end of our careers. So close to feelings I am having.
This is a down to earth believable story. Again Mr. Stevens has come up with a great book! I can't wait for the next one.
It. I like the way you write, the book was an easy read.
I have several of your books. I am a fan of Michael Connelly,John Grisham, Lee Child, to name a few. They are also easy to read authors. Hope my review helps. Charlene Ray
Very enjoyable book. Having been a high school and collegiate an I could relate to the book. Again thank you Dustin for writing a very entertaining book for one of your readers.
I loved this book. To me it was a story about what everyone knows to be true but really isn't true. Kris wanted to make a transition from the life to normal but it was as if life was conspiring against him. Sometimes everybody don't know jack but even so you can't buck against the current. There was no mystery but there was a lot of heart and depth to characters and story.
It took some time for me to get hooked by this book as I found the main character obnoxious. I then realized that this is what the author was capturing-he would maybe use another word to describe "The Quarterback". It got better as the story went on and pulled me into the story and I felt some compassion for the character. I would have liked to explore the injury more and see how his choices after his injury impacted his life. All in all, a good read.
Dustin Stevens has - up to now - not disappointed me. Although the premise of The Quarterback was good and the explanations of brain injuries enlightening, his characters fell short this time. I felt they were shallow, emotionless, and going nowhere and most had no redeeming qualities.
I honestly felt I needed an appointment with my chiropractor after all the head and body “twisting “, “rolling “, “rocking”, “bobbing” and ‘jerking “. I don’t know how to get rid of the “smirking “, scowling, or “smug” looks but even my face ached. There were also a lot of words missing in the text and a good editor would be beneficial.
Not a comfortable read for me, but I am determined to plow through to the end.
